A. 238 Appleby , Arthur (1849 -1912) was born at Burton on- Trent, Staffs. e He was trained as c mechanical engineer under Hamilton Woods of +l Thompson Bad + Woods Newcastle on Tyne . Owing to ill health he had to take a ling Gea voyage and came to N.Z. in '67. He continued to live in Ch Ch ' the rest of his life which was a varied on e. Burt re thing that never varied was his lose of music . He started off asa news paper reporter . Then ho spent five years in her Fereday s law off ce. Then for 22 years he was in the land and estate office of Charles Clark. Ther he started on his own as a land and estate agent in Hereford St. He had a good tenor voce and took isay tenor parts in in any performances of oratorio ste. He was a member and president of the old ChCh Musical Soc. He was a founder and president of the Linder tafel, He was a volunteer , and wore many live ting prizes and became the charm ions rife shot in Canty. Hes was sec. and president of the Cramer Square Lawn Tannins Club and president of the Canty. Terns Club For mne years he was a member of the ChCh C.C. His wife also had a good Nore ; they saigon diets al St Michaels concerts June '71 . He was a naturalist and speciali ied in lepidoptera and presented a good collection to the Museo , July 72.
