Marks/Inscriptions: Augustus James A. 142 Alport, A.J. was born and married in England but apparently he came from Nova Scotia to N.Z. He came to Lylt when Capt. Thomas was the port ready for the settlers and his name appears in the getting Assoc. books (Turnbull Lib.) as having tools issued to him. Canty. He married Susannah a sister of the Bishop brothers at St. Mary's Islington. She was born at Maidstone Sept. 1812. Brenchley was a Bishop name and he named his Lylt land Brenchley Farm. It was leased to Wm Graham. The first job the Lylt Times press did in Lylt. was to print A import forms for him. This was before the first paper was printed. J.L. Crompton advertised in the first number of the Lylt. Times that he had made arrangements for the carriage of luggage etc from Lylt to Heathcote and that Alport was his agent. He had No 1. auctioneers license; Longden and Le Cren had No.2. He was the auctioneer who sold the first town sections in Lylt. and ChCh. Later he specialised in selling Kauri timber. He was locally known as "bumble-foot." When the Society of Land Purchasers was dissolved and the Lylt. Colonists Soc. took its place S. Marks/Inscriptions: A. 142 A.J. Alport. Alport became its forst sec. He was returned to the Prov. Coun for Lylt. in Nov. 57. He was an original director of the Canty . Steam Navigation Co. In '58 he was elected president of the Lylt. Colonists Society which had lately reev ed a grant 7on the Prov. Govt. and had extended its library. Lectures were given and it performed a useful function in the toon. He him self gave a lees lecture on +Miner and its uses " in May '59 wheel was received W ith applause . Soon after a letter appeared in the Standard twitting Alport w ith the fact that the lecture was not his own Com position . He rep hed Auger ey that he had never held it out to be. when the Chamber of Commerce was started in 159 in Lylt he was elected deputy Chairman and the following year was chairman. When facts the Rev . Jackson , the bishop designate visited Lylt in '51 he diustenod one of Alport3s children. Dr. Guidry when he arrived greeted him as a fellow hes on . Selwyn Bee says Alport was the Louder O of Lodge Mar unity but that honour has usually ben assigned to Thomas Abraham ; but Alport was the first Worship ut master. In 17.9 .88 alport leased to R.B. This was a sub. less; W.G. Brittan held the freehold. Sewell in his journal says that he was a bustling active man, Well to do in the world . He was a cheap land man a follow s 8 of Gi George Grey1 His fees for selling church land wee £ 135 and Godley thought they wer s gao, bita t and declined paying them. The ase came to Court and badge Stephen reserved his decision bout made it clear ha thought the charges were too high. It appener fom documents in the L. + . office that he finally got a verdict r £256 -1-0 with interest. This included commission for selling the barracks, wharves and a plot brown gs the Botanical Gardens North of Lylt and the ChCh Reserves. Alport got info trouble of some sort and disappeared f 7imr Lylt. There was nd ch wooed in the newspapers and the only reference is in Torlesse 6 Dary "The Lylt. Wm Graham of Lylt mus ( Lave leased it as he was continually waring people against citing firewood in Benchley Farm. His bother d so Sold Town SSc. 98 . 14 ac £L200 and 244 al . at Pigeon Bay at Ls Pa. Al ports house was Withdrawn at £150 . Alport also owned some Kaiapoi se clous be breen the Cam and the Marin North Moal. which he borg Lb f ron Sidey and A.A. Dobbs. . Alport wife Susannah died Ly lt. 17.10.58.
