Researcher comments/remarks
The Christchurch Chinese Methodist Church on Papanui Road sustained severe damage during the 4 September 2010 earthquake. The red placards placed on the door of the church indicate that the building was assessed as unsafe by the Christchurch City Council and no access was allowed. The building was an unreinforced red brick masonry building, which meant that many of the bricks in the taller walls were shaken loose.
Following the 4 September 2010, 22 February 2011 and 14 June 2011 earthquakes public buildings were visually inspected and assigned a coloured placard which gave an initial guide to the safety of the building. A red placard meant that the building was considered unsafe to enter; yellow gave restricted access for the purpose of further assessment or removing supplies or equipment; green meant that the building appeared sound but further assessment would still be needed. A red placard can be seen on the door of this building.
