Researcher comments/remarks
One of the most noticeable effects of the earthquakes in Canterbury was the loss of basic infrastructure such as power, water and sewerage. The earthquakes caused more faults to the power system than would normally be experienced in a decade. This cut section of power cable demonstrates the damage that was sustained during the 22 February 2011 earthquake by the cable network that supplied power for Christchurch. Orion, the primary power supply contractor in the Canterbury region, estimated that the damage sustained following 22 February 2011 earthquake was around 10 times as severe as it had been following 4 September 2010. Power supplies continued to be affected in the months and years following the earthquake, as repairs to the network and demolition of buildings interrupted supply.
