Only 4 to 6 pilot "Maori" character jugs were produced by the Royal Doulton factory, ca 1939. One was sent to their Australasian agency John Shorter & Co. of Sydney ca July 1941 and remained in the firm’s possession until sale to Canterbury Museum. It was "held over for the duration" of World War 2 (see inscription on base, dated 1941.
