Basket

Description
Twig basket in earthenware, cream glazed. Leeds Queen's Ware type. This dish is an almost perfect example (only one slight break in the twined support in the middle) of imitation 'twig' or 'withie' basket, with a solid bottom and fine strips attached and wicker-worked. Technique invented by the Leeds pot works, England, in the 1700s but continued into the Victorian era and imitated at Castleford and Don and by various pottery works at Staffordshire. See "Ceramic Art of Great Brittain" by Jewitt, page 271.
