Biography
Charles Brough worked at Doulton between 1903-11, and came to the firm from Copeland, where he had been chosen to demonstrate the art of ceramic painting to the Princess of Wales when she visited the Spode factory in 1897. He decorated vases in the Sèvres style, and these were exhibited at the St Louis Exhibition in 1904. He decorated many of the richest styles of dessert sets, including some for King Edward VIII and some of the Indian rulers. According to Desmond Eyles (The Doulton Burslem Wares), Brough’s flowers, in the Sèvres and Meissen styles as well as English, “are particularly noteworthy but he was a versatile artist and his painting of game birds, cattle and landscapes is also of a high order. His work is rare and much sought after.”
