Biography
Son Robert Allen, designer and head of the gilding department at Royal Doulton. Harry Allen was apprenticed to Doulton at age 14. His training was supervised by his father and Harry Piper (one of Doulton's leading artists). He also studied for 10 years at the Burslem School of Art. IN his early twenties he was already one of Doulton's most versatile artists, excelling equally in painting landscapes, birds and flowers. Among his many subjects were Arab villages, Moorish mosques and palaces, Nile views, desert scenes, Breton fairs, strolling players, figures in woodland and river landscapes, moonlight scenes. His paintings of birds were among the finest in the industry, and are particularly well seen in the Titanium Wares featuring kingfishers, owls, toucans, nightingales, thrushes and other species. His skill with the brush led to his becoming one of the first of the small band of painters of early Royal Doulton figures, and from about 1924 onwards this became his main activity. Harry Allen occasionally used the pseudonym 'Richmond' on items mainly lithoprinted with additional hand-painting.
