Biography
A dog trainer on the [Terra Nova] expedition. His full name correctly spelt was Dmitriy Semenovich Girev and he was born in Sakhalin, Eastern Siberia. When Cecil Meares went to Nikolayevsk to purchase dogs for the Terrra Nova Expedition, Demitri was recommended to him as an experienced dog driver, and indeed it was he who helped Meares to choose the thirty sledge dogs from the various villages in the lower Amur River region. After the expedition he went to England and then to New Zealand. Eventually he returned to Nikolayevsk and worked in the gold mines.
