Broad Family

Biography
Mr Charles Broad, Resident Magistrate & Warden, Greymouth - came to NZ from Melbourne and in August 1863 was gazetted Receiver of Gold Revenue and Clerk at the Hogburn (Mt John/Naseby). IN NOvember 1863 he receiveda commission under the hand of the Governor as Resident Magistrate and Warden. Had the initiation of the following goldfields: (Otago) Mt Ida, Hamilton, McRae's Flat, Hndus, Serpentine; (Nelson) Brighton (Jan 1867), CHarleston, Mangapeka, Reefton; (West Coast) WEstport, Greymouth, Kumara, Ahaura, Grey Valley, Buller Valley.
His son, Mr CHarles F A Broad (father of Dorothy and Frances Broad) was one of the earliest banking officials on the West Coast - National Bank of New Zealand in 1873. He was born at Williamstown, Victoria (Australia). His first appointment was at Reefton and also served at Kumara, Waimate, Wanganui, Goldsborough, Rimu, Hokitika, and Greymouth where he was appointed manager in 1890.
The family are connected to Lionel Monckton, the British composer, and there may also be aconnection with the Bonar or Bell family.
Dorothy and Frances Broad were both concert pianists, performing, teaching and broadcasting (in the early years of radio) on the WEst Coast and in Christchurch.
