Biography
Daughter of Frederick Waymouth of Christchurch, who was managing director of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Co., and was responsible for provisioning the Antarctic Expeditions. The officers of the Discovery were regular guests at his home. His daughter known as Beatrice or 'Biddy', was an outstanding pupil of the Canterbury College School of Art. In 1902 she went to England & studied at C.R. Ashbee’s Guild of Handicraft in Chipping Camden, where she was taught by the silversmith George Hart. On returning to New Zealand she exhibited Arts and Crafts metal ware and jewellery at the 1906 Exhibition. Shortly afterwards the family emigrated to England and Biddy married John Colin Hughes. Her sister Eleanor married John's brother, artist Hughes.
