It is actually an S class Fairlie locomotive - larger than the similar R class - built by the Avonside Engine Co. Ltd in Bristol, England in 1880, but not in service in New Zealand until 1882 and 1883. This is S2 (later S213) from the Wellington Section: a caption for this photograph reproduced in Sean Millar's "The NZR Steam Locomotive" is "Wellington Section's S2 (later S213), in original condition at Cross Creek, circa 1886". S2's maker's number was 1280/80 and it was in service in 1882.

The locomotive is an 'R' Class Single Fairlie. These came into service 1878-79. There is one preserved as a static display in Reefton.
