Researcher comments/remarks
The Lyttelton streetscape has changed dramatically from its pre-earthquake appearance and will continue to change as new buildings are erected on empty sections. In this photograph London Street has lost most of the large landmark masonry buildings. The intersection in the foreground has had the buildings demolished on all four corners. Recording the transitional landscapes as the demolition and rebuilding unfolds acts not only as an aid to the memory of a hectic time, but also as a baseline for studying the new urban forms created by the rebuild. In 2013 the debate over what form and style replacement builds should take remains unresolved.
