Closed after the September 2010 earthquakes, the Lyttelton Museum building suffered serious damage in the 22 February 2011 Earthquake. The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Air Force Museum developed a plan to remove significant and at risk collection items from the building for safe storage. A second salvage plan to remove as much as possible of the collection was made more urgent after the 14 June 2011 earthquakes. In September 2011 the building was demolished and the Lyttelton Museum’s collection placed in safe storage at the Cultural Collections Recovery Centre, Wigram while plans are made for a new building.
