The damage from the June 2011 aftershocks led to the demolition of the St Joseph Church 146 years after its opening in June 1865. The Lyttelton Catholic congregation has continued to meet in the Parish Centre on Exeter Street. The former school buildings on this site are being used to house the senior pupils from Lyttelton Main School. In 2014 this arrangement may be expanded to temporarily house more pupils in relocatable classrooms on the church site while a new primary school is built merging Lyttelton Main and Lyttelton West Schools.
