Researcher comments/remarks
In December 2011, the New Zealand Police decided that the Lyttelton Police Station would be demolished. The building, which opened in 1882 was regarded, until the 22 February 2011 earthquakes, as New Zealand's oldest operational police station. The Police Museum indicated that they wish for some key elements of the building to be preserved and possibly integrated into a new police facility in Lyttelton. As at June 2013 there was no indication of what form a new police station would take however the possibility of building a combined emergency services centre with the Fire Service and St John Ambulance is being explored.
