Researcher comments/remarks
Unlike most areas of Christchurch, land damage on the Port Hills was due to physical changes to the slopes of the hills; Lyttelton did not have liquefaction occurring as the soil composition of the Port Hills is different to that in the flat parts of Christchurch. In Lyttelton much of this damage was cracking where retaining walls or banks slumped or gave way. As well as the risk posed by weakened walls or earth banks in aftershocks, unrepaired cracking can lead to water infiltration and erosion or undermining of these damaged areas.
