People all around New Zealand participated in gestures of support for Christchurch following the 6.3 magnitude earthquake on 22 February 2011. In Queenstown, an electronic road work sign was programmed to show the words '12.51pm, 2 minutes silence'. Many regions around New Zealand, including Queenstown, observed two minutes silence as a gesture of respect and remembrance of the 185 people who had lost their lives during the earthquake.
People all around New Zealand marked the one week anniversary of the 22 February 2011 with a two minute silence at the time of day that the earthquake occurred. In Queenstown, an electronic road work sign was programmed to alternately show the words “Kia Kaha Christchurch” and "12.51pm, 2 minutes silence" on 1 March 2011. In the aftermath of the earthquake, “Kia Kaha” became a much used message of support for Christchurch. This Maori phrase translates as be or stay strong.
