The red brick building is the Knox Church; it still stands on the corner of Bealey Avenue and Victoria Street following the earthquake, though some extreme measures were taken to make it safe. The red brick walls were deconstructed down to a safe level, exposing the structural wooden beams, and surrounded with a wire mesh fence to keep people a safe distance away. The buildings beyond the church were promptly demolished following the 4 September 2010 earthquake as depicted in this photograph.
Older brick buildings lacked resistance to the horizontal forces of the earthquakes and many were severely damaged. The decision to demolish the block of shops shown in this photograph was made within days of the 4 September 2010 earthquake. The brick building in the foreground is Knox Presbyterian Church; it also sustained structural damage to its brickwork. The walls of this church were deconstructed, and the rebuild design by Wilkie + Bruce Architects Ltd will accentuate the surviving wooden pillars and triple gabled roof.
