Researcher comments/remarks
The chimney that crushed this car in Strowan, Christchurch was thrown from the roof of the house behind it, showing the phenomenal force exerted during the 4 September 2010 earthquake. Falling chimneys could cause severe damage to people and property and were quickly recognised as a serious potential hazard during an earthquake. Following 4 September 2010, many of the chimneys in Canterbury that survived were removed and some were replaced with lightweight replicas.
A large number of cars were damaged in the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquakes. Many parked cars were written off after being crushed by falling debris. The large quantities of bricks shed from the walls of unreinforced buildings and chimneys toppling from adjacent buildings were particularly damaging and unfortunately, in some cases in the central city during the 22 February 2011 earthquake, fatal. Vehicles also became stuck in liquefaction or in holes which opened up in roads where the land had subsided.
