Researcher comments/remarks
This poster accompanied more than 21 boxes containing over 50,000 face masks donated by the city of Kurashiki to Christchurch following the 22 February 2011 earthquake. A further 2,000 masks were sent to the Student Volunteer Army for use during the suburban cleanup project. Facemasks were recommended by Christchurch Public Health staff as a safety precaution for those handling liquefaction, as it could have been contaminated by raw sewage from broken drainage and sewer systems, posing the threat of disease should it be inhaled. This practical gift was sent just three days before the devastating tsunami hit Japan on 11 March 2011. It provides a tangible demonstration of the international connection between sister cities Christchurch and Kurashiki.
