Background
Residents who owned commercially produced portable toilets like this ‘Thunder Down Under’ model quickly put them to household use following the 22 February 2011 earthquake. These toilets were originally designed for use while camping, and were quickly employed after the earthquake. Unfortunately, disruption to postal services in the days following the earthquake meant that purchasing a toilet for immediate delivery was not possible. It took time for the Christchurch City Council to distribute chemical toilets to affected residents, so many make-shift replicas were designed by residents in the first few days following the earthquake.
