Homebush Station was in the process of being registered as an historic place by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust when the 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck on 4 September 2010. Home to the Deans family, one of the first European families to farm the Canterbury Plains on their property in Riccarton, the homestead was built between 1880 and 1909. The homestead was severely damaged during the 4 September 2010 earthquake. Aerial images of the collapsed red brick building were broadcast in many international media reports after the earthquake. The report concludes that the homestead was to be dismantled to ground level leaving the foundations laid in 1880 intact until a decision about preservation could be made.
