Description
Striped knitted scarf with coloured stripes representing the colours of the Aurora, hand made (on home knitting machine) and presented by the Canterbury Women’s Institute to each member of the Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1955-1958 (TAE) for use during the International Geophysical Year and during the expedition. This scarf is personalised on the lower ends with "TAE 1956-8" within the shape of the Antarctic continent on one end and "Ed" on the other. Used by Sir Edmund Hillary during the TAE.
