Ceramic: vessel
Description
One unglazed tan-brown earthenware vessel. Takes the form of an upper ovoid cup divided by four equidistantly spaced vertical ridges and a pedestal with a flared base. Each face of upper part of vessel exhibits moulded decoration comprising circular serpentine 'badge' surrounded by a keyhole pattern. Pedestal presents moulded plantain leaf pattern. Probably broken imitation of ancient bronze gu or zun.

Delivered to Canterbury Museum by A.E. Adlam. Miss Adlam, an Englishwoman, lived in China for 25 years. Prior to the war she taught English in Shanghai, and during the war she worked as Secretary to the Friends' Relief Service. She visited relatives in New Zealand in 1947.
