Kākahu: Huruhuru, Belcher

Maker
Unknown
Production date
1890-1910
Description
The kākahu is tailor-made shown in its shaping along the lower half, with a tight candle-wick kaupapa woven together with muka aho. Unusually, although there is use of candle-wick and wool, it contains only native bird feathers. Most kākahu of this age would contain at least some exotic bird, such as chicken. Another significant feature of this kākahu is the weaver’s signature of grey/white (possibly weka feathers) at the two lower corners, indicating the weaver was a known senior or master weaver. The condition of the kākahu is stable with minimal feather loss. The kākā feathers have retained their colour.
