A schoolteacher, Hazel McCaughern began potting at Risingholme Community Centre in Christchurch in the 1960s with Yvonne Rust, Rosemary Perry, Nola Barron, Doris Holland (Lusk) et al. She was a foundation member of the Canterbury Potters' Association. After retiring from teaching, she potted full-time, using oil and electric kilns. Latterly, her oil-kiln was stoked at 6 am each day by Norman Withers (who acted as executor of her estate when Miss McCaughern had to go into a nursing home in 1990).
See also C1971.9 for one of her pots.
She travelled to England in the 1970s and brought home two tea-chests of pieces by England potters.
