Henry Ffitch was born on 21 February 1840 in Bury St Edmonds in Suffolk England. He immigrated to New Zealand with his parents and siblings on board the Sir George Pollock in 1851. The family purchased 63 acres of land in what is now Sydenham at Colombo St and Alymer St. In 1884 he married Florence Dunnage. The couple had three children, Reginald George Crush, Herbert and Gladys. Henry died on 17 March 1918 at the age of 78.
