Biography
Charles Lewis Hopkins was born in 1867 on his parents' farm at Saltwater Creek. As a young man he worked at Kaikoura as a timber feller. He met his future wife, Annie Waters in Kaikoura. After his marriage Charles and his wife shifted to Cust where they farmed. Their three boys (Maurice, Keith and Lewis) were born at Cust. The family shifted top Peraki on Banks Peninsula where they farmed cocksfoot and cattle. Three girls were born at Peraki - Annie, and Florence and Beatrice (twins, b. 8 January 1913). In 1917, the Hopkins family shifted to Wainui and lived in the Valley Road, on the left near the Wainui School. Charles Hopkins was a champion cyclist, winning several trophies for pennyfarthing cycle races. He gave up cycling after breaking his knee when living at Cust, after his marriage.
