Biography
The Springfield Coal & Pottery Company appears to have been established in the late 1870s. Its manager was Alfred Condliffe, a Yorkshire potter who emigrated with his family and brother Thomas, also a potter. In 1882 the Springfield pottery exhibited at the International Exhibition of Art & Industry in Christchurch, where its practical wares (such as chimney pots) were described as being among the best on the NZ market at the time.
