Biography
Pennell was educated at Exeter School in England and joined the Royal Navy in 1898. By 1903, he had been promoted to lieutenant. In 1910, he was appointed to command the ship Terra Nova on Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s British Antarctic Expedition 1910-1913. During the expedition, he conducted magnetic observations and assisted Edward Wilson and Dennis Lillie with their studies of birds and whales. He returned with the Terra Nova to Lyttelton for the winters of 1911 and 1912, returning to Antarctica with supplies. After the expedition, he was promoted to the rank of commander. In 1914, during World War I, he was given command of the HMS Queen Mary. He died in 1916 during the Battle of Jutland.
