Biography
Albert William Andrew was born and schooled in Christchurch and he had the distinction of becoming the first New Zealander to obtain a direct commission into the British Army in 1886. He was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Devonshire regiment which he joined in India in 1887. He served with distinction in the South African war as commander of the 6th and 10th contingents before rejoiniing his regiment in India in 1903. He retired from service at the end of WWI
