Biography
William (Bill) Burton was born in London in April 1888. He began farming after leaving school, and joined the Royal Navy at the age of 20. he was nominated for Scott's second British Antarctic Expedition on the "Terra Nova" in 1910. He served the full three years on the "Terra Nova", making trips back and forth to Antarctica. He married Florence Cott in 1914. He was invalided out of the Royal Navy due to hearing problems in 1920, and emigrated to New Zealand, where he was employed with the Christchurch Tramways Board for 27 years. In 1963 he returned to the Antarctic as a guest of the US Navy, and he became a life member of the Antarctic Society in 1964. His wife died in 1968 and he never remarried. He died in 1988 survived by 2 sons, 5 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. (Information taken from obituary by his son Robin Burton).
