One shield-shaped medal with ribbon and clasp. Depicted in relief on the front of the medal is a rifleman. On the reverse is engraved "WON BY No. 181 Private Patrick Curran, North Otago Mounted Rifle Vols. BEST SHOT. NORTH OTAGO DISTRICT 1897-8. 82 POINTS".
