Description
A earthenware plaque in form of a deep dish with wide flat rim. Wide gols border to rim; "fish-scale" relief scallops on black rim; dished centre with slip-painted motif in low-relief, of young woman, facing left, with brown hair fastened in high "pony-tail", hair blowing forward; fillet with green beads and large crimson and yellow heart around hair; wearing purple gown with wide sleeves, jewel at front, collar of red and yellow; figure on a green ground with several yellow "bubbles" of varying size; signed "Noke" [in reverse so probably a transfer] on left near gilt edge. Hand-painted title "Vanity" on base; brown printed backstamp for Doulton Burslem England (1891-1902 period). 15mm foot pierced in 3 places for hanging attachment.
