Researcher comments/remarks
This comprehensive emergency kit is designed to provide a four person household with all the essential items they will require following an emergency. This kit includes utensils for cooking, food, tarpaulins for shelter and whistles for attracting attention. Part of the New Zealand Government’s contingency plan in the event of a natural disaster was to encourage households to prepare to be self sufficient for up to three days in case emergency services may be unable to reach people. Since the February earthquake the Government now recognises that people need to be prepared to supply their own water and power for longer than three days. Preparation kits like these now include items such as water treatment tablets for treatment of water, because of the difficulty in storing sufficient water for an extended period.
