Provenance details
Born in England, June Ombler was the daughter of RAF pilot Albert James Robert Moss who was stationed in British Hong Kong from 1929. She was evacuated to Sydney during World War Two returning to Hong Kong after the conflict had settled. There she met her husband, Kiwi Stan Ombler. Stan's job sent him to mainland China and several countries in Africa. The couple ultimately retired in New Zealand. In later life June became interested in growing orchids and actively worked with the blind. She received a Queen's Service Order Medal in 1995 for her community work. In her memoir June recalls the family evacuated Hong Kong very quickly during World War Two taking only clothes and leaving behind photographs and knickknacks. It is more likely this sculpture was acquired when she return to Hong Kong after the war or when she and her husband moved to mainland China.
