Provenance details
In 1949 Stan Johnson took over Leigh and Co's grocery business. His son Colin joined the family business in 1957 and worked there until his retirement in 2016. Colin remembers the black grocer's bicycle being at the shop before his father bought it in 1949. Johnson's Grocery kept its old fashioned lay out with all the stock on display making it a popular tourist attraction and shopping destination. The original building at 787 Colombo Street was damaged during the February 2011 earthquake, but Johnson's was able to reopen at the Re:Start Mall later that year. With his lease up for renewal and uncertainty over the long term plans for the Re:Start Mall, Colin decided to retired and close up shop in 2016. He called the Museum to offer his iconic bicycle and a few other items for the collection. Unsold stock from Johnson Grocery.
