The hotel was first built for Archibald Keir Murray in 1851. Murray was from Glasgow and arrived in Durban, Natal (now Kwazulu-Natal) in 1850. He was a founder of Pinetown and gave it this name. In 1879 the hotel was sold to R H Turner.
