Description
One bisected stamp, New Zealand Postage, one shilling with postmark. In March, 1857, the 1/2 oz rate on letters for Great Britain via Southampton was fixed at 6d. Prior to the issue of a 6d stamp in 1859, the postmaster at Dunedin adopted the economical method of using the half of a 1s stamp. The bisected stamps were not sold to the public but were affixed to the envelops in the post office. Local print on blue paper.
