Envelope: New Zealand Frank Stamp

Production date
1855-1857
Description
One envelope addressed 'W.T.L Travers Esquire, Solicitor, Nelson, N.Z.' 'Registered 304' and a large figure 2 is written across the envelope. The envelope has three postmarks reading 'PAID NEW PLYMOUTH NEW ZEALAND' 'WELLINGTON NEW ZEALAND OC 2 1858' and 'NELSON NEW ZEALAND OC 5 1858'. Provisional use of frank stamp. The paid marks supplied by the British Post Office in 1846 were used to indicate the prepayment of postage until 1855 when adhesive stamps were available for that purpose. The provisional use of the paid mark at New Plymouth in 1858 was evidently due to a temporary lack of adhesive stamps.
