Rutherford, Andrew William (1842- 1918) was born 9.3.42 eldest son of George Ru the ford, educ. at a private school at Adelaide and came across to N.Z. with his father in the second of the there tris Geo Rutherford made While establishing himself in the Amuri. George Rutherford and Alfred Donat bought Mendi from Caverhill . In 9 Andrew Rutherford bought from J.1. Macfarlane , who now owned Hawke wood the fine pro pert y know as Brook dale of 19000 ac. It was well fenced and planted. Andrew was a successful breeder of merinos and paid 500 gus for a rain from Alex Murray of S. Aust. in 1901 His son Norman who inherited the Mendi Hills homestead block showed merinos regularly at the Ch.Ch. Show. He represented Amuri in the Nelson Prov. Coun. 70-71 and was for long a member of the Annui Rd Bd and was chairman . He was a member of the Cheviot C.C. for 12 years and chairm n for 3 . He was for 20 years a member of the Lie. Comm and was also a member of the North Canty Hospital and Char. Aid Bd. He used to take cattle and sheep over to the West Coast. His wife used to help with the dipping and once fell in Their greatest early difficulty was a shortage of g0o d household water. They used to ship wool Away from the Conway Boat Harbor , the Conway River having a vary even, lat bed ; but they had trouble with the bullocks getting son feet l y travelling continually on stoner, En in those days line was carted back into the station and burnt. Norman youngest son was reside ary legate after widow and sundry legacies were satisfied. The other sons were all provided for during his life.
