Marks/Inscriptions: J.F. on Haast 2 H.1 Early in '61 Haast was appointed Provincial Geologist to the Canty Provo . Govt Each year he spent 6 or 8 months in the field e carmin the miniat resources of the Provin The Govt. was disappointed that he discovered no gold (Otago was reaping a golden harvest at the time) and no extensiv c coal fields. bet he extended the knowledge of Canterbury geography and its mineral resources In '65 he found and named the Franz Josef Glacier . In '66 he unearthed the great deposit of moa boesky on Glenmark Station and this enabled him, by means of exchanges to form the basis of the Canterbury Mus enm which in his day became probably the leading mus erin in the Souther Hean sphere. He wrote papers on the moa which were read Geo before the Zoolo gia( Soc. and the Royal Geographical and logical Societies. These confirmed his standing in the scientific world and he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Soc. and other learned societies. In '63 Haast discovered the existence of copious supplies op arte ian water in Canty. In '68 he was oorested appointed Breton of the Canty Muscu which was opened in '70. He and Bishop Harper together founded the Canty Colegrate hiu ion in 72 which in two years developed into the Canty Universi 7 College. He was the first professor op Geology and Palace toler and was a member of the Senate of the mu. of N.Z. '80 -87. In '75 the Em peron of Austria conferred on him a patent of nobility whereby he became known as von Haast. In '83 he was awarded the C. M.G. He went to London to represent N.Z. in the Indian and Colonial Exhibition and there rece oed the K.C.M.G. The first contributions from abroad r the future muse rein arrived in Jan 62.
