Marks/Inscriptions: E. 134 J.D.Enys. He dior sheep for Samuel Butler and visited him at various times. He met G. Parke of Waihao who had known his brother Frank at Harrow He also made several visits to Innes and Place at Mt. Brown He and Charles and E.C.J. Stevens were the syndicate that bought Orari Gorge from Tripp , Feb. 64 for f 825000 - 5400 0 ac + s000 sheep. Edward Curry of Mt. Torlesse also had a share in this deal . According to in Alu. S4 Eye they sold it back to Tripp before the time came to take delivery which was not till Feb. 65. Cry says in his journal that he and Enys Brother were partners. The Enys went into Caste Hill on 19.10.64 and started shearing almost mig diale . They were not well oft - lived frugal4y. hen J.D went to Eng. in '67 his father made over some more money to them which helped them through the bad snow of '67 in which they had heavy losses , but not so bad as most others . He only arrived back from a trip by the Ivanhoe 12.6.74. on of the mcle names for them was "the buckets in the well" lore was a wong the other was at home. J.D.built a new house for himself which he called Tr hosie . He had his woodshed on the Porter and a farming homestead where the station buildings now are. He let the farm first to George O'malley and later to John Mili ken. Once a digger was returning from the West Coast and was murdered in a strick reserve near by and was buried in Buchanan Creek (later Black ball Cree)J. Enys was the nearest J.P. and attended the inquest on him. They never fond the murderer. When Milken bought Flock + cooke- Hell in 1908 he dismantled Enys 's house house and whare built of slabs and took them to Flock Hill and Ie erected them. The weather board sitting room added to the stone, i ( 1880 he carted to Castle Hill homestead to be the Kitchen, bust by Censtaiayf (James Courtenay q.v. had built a stone house for Enys at Castle ill in the '60's. , only foundations and chimneys were left at Treks,ick. He was a student of geology , botany and biology. He discovered and studied the fossil beds in the limestone of the river gorges at Castle Hell. Although he was best Known for his work on maths and bute his, he was also a keen naturalist and first recorded on Mt Torlesse a specimen of Bo tycho corn Jamar i. - never since found in N.Z. In 1880 he published privately his catalogue of butter hes of N.Z. Fereday mable a nnnior contribution to thes - including onc of the plates. He was elected to the Prov. He was a keen fisherman and was always putting out young trout. He was chairman of the Muse non comm. in the Prov. Coun. and was an original member of the Cat. Coll. Board; he was also a member of the University Senate. He was elected to the Selwyn C.C. Nov. 78. He contested the Coleridge seat in Part in '81 against David Macmillan but was defeated. Soon after he was given a dinner by his friends at Flanagan Hotel, Sheffield. Macmillan say s Sages Bros bought 13.11.62 R.S.479: 20 ac. at Malvern between Rough Flat Creek and Rubicon. This was the nucleus of Otarama Fann taken up by Enys Bros and Edward Curry of Mt Torlesse. Ina letter he expressed Violent dislike of Curry. "our disgusting partner " His brother Charles dred in 1890. His eld brother Frank also died and thes meart he had to return to England and take over the family seat. He sold Castle Hill to A.G Stronach It is said that he gave the font to the Cathedral cut out of Castle Hell stone . Marks/Inscriptions: J.P. Enys F. 134 in memory of his brother Capt Stan ley of the Brits mart. J.D. Enys was given a farewell diner at Springfield when he left June '91. His brother Charles probably took rather less pent in station management than J.D. All agre e that he was a brilliant shot and he certainly astonished the Ch.Ch. Club with his skill at sucker. Both of the brothers were devoted to cats and Charles at a meal favourite cat used to lie round his shoulders and pick up any morsel that he fancied. Their man cod used to bing in a meal in the traditional white cap and apron. Charles wert to India for tiger shooting . He became very ill in '8 and was brought to Ch Ch and went home to Eng. where he dred som alter he landed in '90. When J.D was preparing to leave for Eng. he brought his special cat Taiko with its chair and sheepskin ing to Wm. I2aids house and stayed for a fort ought to see it properly acclimated . Tipo lived there for 10 years. When J.D. sold Caste Hell he retained the freehold of the limestone chips he was so fond of. He was devoted to his brother Charles. Charles once got a pistol because he thought it was not fair to shot native birds with a gun - - too easy. C.F. Barker was a calle at castle Hill for a shot time Fe .66.
