Marks/Inscriptions: J W. Lead well . 369 He had a farm at Styx which he called K Loni n and he lived there. In 67 he became prominent as a comm. agent, house and land agent His employee , John B. Manson charged him with assault. Manson went to Treadwell house to claim his wages , and Tread well flew into a rage threatened him with a gun and hist him over the head with a pokor cams ing a severe wound. Tread well was fined £10, 3 of which went to Marson He was bankrupt in May '68 and was imprisoned in the Common gaol at Lylt . While he was in gao there he had dealings with Luis Berlin er an abscond ing bankrupt , and he gave evidence about these dealings whish seemed not to his credit. His estate June '68 showed ass ets £ 1419 and liabilities £696. It was said at his bankrupted proceedings that he had been in a form of the first standing in Ch.Ch and his bankrupting was caused by his taking to farming about which he knew very Little. He was acs used of selling 8 grain and live and dead stock and putting the proceeds out of the reach of his creditors. He was one of the early local preachers of the Methodist Church in Ch.Ch. He moved to Kaiapoi about '69 and was bookkeeper to Belcher and Fairweather there. In Ap. 74 He he had a private classical and commercial Academy at the Odd fellows Hall , Lichfield St. He was a candidate for Parlett for the City o y Ch.Ch in the General Election of '76. He said he had been in Canty for 17 years . He was not taken serisrisly and there was no reason why he should be. He only got 22 votes. He wrote a letter LT. 20.1.76 advocating ng law reform and passing lightly on to a Universal Empire congress , abolition of Standing armies and Lavis and other world shaking ideas When the Drainage Bd scheme was rooted in '77 he was Sec. of the Ratepayers Reform Assoc. which aimed at draining the Estuary and making a canal, docks itz. They had a secret dodo iser The whole affair was cranky. He stood for Ch.Ch. at the election of '79 and was bolton of the poll ; he stood as a liberal. He was alw ars involved in some wild Scheme . He applied to Land Rolleston for per mission for the Co. Operative . to occupy the Waimate Plaisir (North Is) . Rolleston replied that he saw no possible chance of such permission being given Dec. 79. White Junr got in very easily and Charles Clark was second. According to Edward Curry 's Mt Torlesse Journal , Treadwell was a brother of Mrs Curry He and Edward Curry discussed going into a run in part Treadwell bought about '62 R.S. 49.73 of 380 ac described as ' Road to Selwyn. marr.
