Marks/Inscriptions: T.211 Thomson, James Elliot (1838 -1922) was born in Glasgow. He was one of the thee Thomson brothers who came across from Aust. with their aunt Miss Jean Collier, she bought Otaio fom She was the first person to hold pastoral lien ses over Otaio; Acland say s they were dated S Fb. 1855 n she transferred the run to them almost at once and lived with them tell she d. in 1862. The brothers became wellknown with their skill w ith bucking horses. The brothers were hard up in '68 and had to sell out to the Teschemaker brothers , Frederick William and Tom. James bought Benmore station on the West Coast Rd. in 71 and in oct. 7 sold out to the Hommersham brothers in Oct. 72. JI was described as of 10000 ac with 2500 sheep and the price was £1850. He was in the Mackenzie Country for a time and was then at Akitio in the North Is. He returned to the S. Island and leased the Carleton Homestead farm in 80 . He went out of " and it was subdivided When he w os there he sued the Oxford Rd. Ba for damages caused by their by drain overflow ing. He became a stock inspector , went down to Otago , then moved to Havelock North . He finally Acland , Ch.Ch. Marks/Inscriptions: 2 211 settled at Timaru where he spent the rest of his life At the first Timaru Show Oct. 66 when he was still at Otaio , he won the prize for the best draught stallion , Tasman. He and Andrew were both elected members of the Ch. Ch. Club in 63. Acland says he built a homestead on the same site as George Matson early homestead - just above Teschemakers school marr. 8.4.63 at the R.C. Church Timaru, Rev. F. F. A. Chataigner Catherine 4"dau of Isaac Brent all Sheath of Aston station on the op awar River. He d. at Timaru Dec. 1922.
