Marks/Inscriptions: T. 115 Teschemaker , Thomas John (1839 -1919) came out with his brother Frederick William in the Royal Stuart arriving 4.1.5 ; he was only 16. He was a son of Frederick Thomas Emanuel Teschemaker und was born at T weston. Devonshire. His mother , whose arden name was Henrietta Eleanor Eliz. Over veg married br in , he first husband John Thierens having died. f.B. Acland and 6 G. Trip were passengers on the Royal Stuart. The brothers bought land at the 7mile peg later known as Belfast but soon sold it and in 58 took np Haldon Station in the Mackenzie Country. They took their mother to Haldon soon after she arrived by the Matoaka in 1860. Toms first exploring trip to the Mackenzie Country was from Ch.Ch. to the Wai taki River then up the River to what became Te Aka tara wa Stat on . He took up 20000 ac first and later mares ed it to 60000 ac. Their original stock of 4 7 0attley was driven through the Mackenzie Pass . Marks/Inscriptions: . Teschemaker built it very low to stand up against the high winds . There were 6 rom s placed end to end with n0 connecting passage They sold Haldon about 68 and bought Otaio. The purchasers of Haldon were Wm. Cunningham Smith and V. Wallace and the price was £3 15250. H.J. Le Cren entered into part. with the brothers and they bought out his quarter interest in 78 , Otaio was thon 17000 ac. freehold and 22000 ac of Leasehold with 21000 sheep . It was valued atf £ 191000 an d when Frederick William deed in 79 Tom became the sole owner. They sold the Mt Nin.od country to Edw ard Elworthy s not Cong after they bought Otaio John C Thierens son of John Thierens q.v. mana ged Otaio from 76 to '98 Ton started selling Land in 1901; in Chat year he sold 3664 to the Govt. was Known as the Kohika settlement. In 1908 he sold the leasehold rin to Carlisle Studholme In 1916 he sold all the remaining freehold except the homestead and 500 ac. He went to live at Middleton in 1909. Marks/Inscriptions: . T.J. Teschemaker collapsed very sud dente in 78 and the 80's were years of depress ion followed by the disastrous '901s. Tom Teschemaker was one of the bes t loved men in Canty He was simple, hearty gen nine, absolutely straight forward. He said exactly What he thought and expected other paco le to treat him as he treated then. He was a bry powerful man and was famous as a bullock driver in his Young days in the Mackenzie country. He was very fond of horses ond r acm 8. He was noted for his honest dealing and fearles suss He was for some years Pres. of the S. Canty. Jockey Club and at the time o f his death was senior steward of the C J.C. He was a class steward of the Timaru A.+P. Assoc for 45 years and never massed o a Timaru Show even after he had gone to live in Ch.Ch. He was a director of the N.Z. Ret.ig. Coy. and of the Permanent Investment Assoc. He was a regular judge of th rough beds at shows throughout Canty. He was a member of the N.Z. Grand National Steep chase Club which founded the famous race at Waimate, He was a trustee of the Timaru Racecourse from '83 till his death . He was a founder of the S.
