Marks/Inscriptions: . 5788 Smyth, Rev. Thos. Jasper (1839-1932) was bore in Co. Cork and took o Eig and his M.A. at Thin . Coll. Dublin . He was a curate in the North of Ireland and then went to Aust. where he married and 2 children were born. On his fathers death he returned to Ireland and succeeded him as Rector of Rath barry , Rosemont . This was in the troubled '80's which ted him to coie out to N.Z. After a short time at St. Peters Ricc. he went to Pleasant Pout and stayed there for 8 years His parish included Te Ngawai and Fairlie. He was temporarily in charge of Fendalton parish , until the Rev. Chaffers - Walsh arrived in '84. St. Stephens church started in his time. Daniel si wood gave a section in Fendalton Rd. The have of the church was consecrated 26.5.76. J.B.A. Acland suggested the name St. Stephens and gave the belle. The Acland family gave the communion vessels. In '83 a new chancel , apse and transept were built and Fendalton was constituted a separate parish. He was a sporting parson and took grey hounds about with him on his rounds. He was at P eas ant Pount 8a4-92. He came to Akaroa in 92. In 93 the parochial Assoc. was formed at Akaroa to look Stephen Parr; Ant. Marks/Inscriptions: Rev. F J. Smyth. S. 5788 to look after church needs. He was a famous joker and numerous of his stories remain. He was presented with a purse of so0vs when he left Fendalton by H.J. Twenty man, churchwarden Jan. 84. He wrote to the Lylt. Times on the subject of sending butter to the London market and seemed to know all about it. He gave detailed directions . He said he used to send butter to London From Ireland He d. 1932 bur.
