Marks/Inscriptions: S. 285 Shepherd , James (1842 - was born in Forfarshire, Scot. and learnt farming in his youth. He went to Queensland in '66 and soon after came on to N.Z . He spent 2 years in Southland and 5 years in Otago. In 73 he moved to S. Canty. and went in for con tract cropping In 1'81 he went os for bought 350 ac. at Sutherlands on the way to Fairlie . This was part of the Levels . estate and he purchase d f on the N.Z. + Aust. Land Coy. He was able to get a further (00 ac. of leasehold.
