Marks/Inscriptions: S. 153 Seager , Samuel Hurst (1858 -1933) was born in London, a son of Samuel Hurst Seager, builder, joiner . He went to Canty Coll and in 82 he and 2 others, B.M. Connal and L. Hawkes decided to 9o to Eng to continue their studies . About 30 Canty Coll students gave them a dinner at Ormsby Royal Hotel . He intended to go to Univ. Coll, London and study cop architecture . When in London he got a certificate f merit in history , also science and in mnog den practice of architecture he gained a certificate of honour .He won a stride ship in Architecture in the Royal Academy of Arts . He delivered a course of lectures to students at South Kensing ton on the science of Building Feb. 84 . He became An Assoc. Royal Inst. Brit. Architects He practised his professi on in Sydney 91-95 and became a lecturer on Architecture at the Canty Coll. School of Arts. T Among his well known buildings were the Ch.Ch.C.C. Chambers , Worc. St. . Ju by le Home at Woolston , Strathmore Hosp He w as very attracted b y Elizabethan brickwork and most of his private house designs contain specimens of this work . The foundation a stone of Ch.Ch. C.C. buildings land by A.A. ( a member Canty Beautify inf Soc. From 20- - he was in Gleaton Britain and while there designed battle memorials in France, Belgium and Gallipoli. He was a pioneer of town plann ing . His houses on Clifton Spon are still admired. notable large houses of nis are George Humphreys at Fendalton and A.A. McKellars, Park Terrace A subject he gave a lot of atten tion was the lighting of picture galleries rom above He judged the com petition for the McDougall Art Galler He lived at Sydney last 5 years died 5.10.33. Paul Pascoe says of him "Any architect of any period is a guardian and a secker ( gordian of what is good in his own time and a secker after improvement. Seager would be such a guardian . He would conserv what had gone before . He would seek s progress also . Later generations ridge harshly , they do not Acknowledge the struggles , perhaps the lael of opportunity . They see the des in of,say 1900 in the light of 1960 when people ar 60 years older and wiser (or more ignorant) . Each architect of each period a bridge to the next .
